Oscar nominated actor James Franco plays twins in the upcoming HBO drama series “Deuce.” That is a sure-fire to win awards. This period piece from industry darling David Simon (“The Wire”) is set against the backdrop of 1970s New York City and chronicles the rise of Franco’s characters in the burgeoning porn industry. Another one-time Oscar nominees, Maggie Gyllenhaal, is his partner in crime.
In the teaser trailer above, catch sight of Franco as both Vincent Martin, an inveterate gambler and his brother Frankie, a bartender in a Times Square dive, who both find themselves embroiled with mobsters looking to make a killing by producing porn. Along for the ride is Gyellenhall, who is all but unrecognizable as street walker Eileen “Candy” Merrell.
Simon co-created “The Deuce” with George Pelecanos, who was one of the writers on his celebrated series “The Wire.” Among the cast are one-time “Wire” players Gbenga Akinnagbe, Chris Bauer and Lawrence Gilliard Jr.. Also featured in “The Deuce” are Gary Carr, Dominique Fishback, Anna Glover, Emily Meade and Jamie Neumann
The first season debuts on HBO on Sept. 10 and will run for eight weeks.
