Country musicians Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley appeared on “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” to discuss their upcoming gig as hosts of the Academy of Country Music Awards this Sunday, April 2. Stephen Colbert asked them, “I’m hosting the Emmys in September. Do you have any advice for me?” Bentley answered, “Drinking works.” Watch their entire conversation above.
Bentley revealed that “right behind [the ACM Awards stage] is a full bar.” But it’s not enough just for the hosts to be drunk. “We encourage the audience to drink too,” said Bryan. Bentley agreed with that strategy: “If they drink enough they forget it.”
This is Bentley’s second year in a row hosting the ACM Awards with Bryan, but Bryan is hosting for the fifth time. Before teaming up with Bentley he emceed the event for three years with Blake Shelton (2013-2015). And they’re not just the presenters for this year’s ceremony. They’re also nominees and performers. Bryan contends for Entertainer of the Year, which he has won twice before (2013, 2015). Bentley is up for three awards including Male Vocalist of the Year, and he’ll be dueting with Cole Swindell on the song “Flatliner.”
Colbert may find himself in a similar position this fall when the Emmys are broadcast on CBS. In addition to hosting the event this year he could return to the awards lineup for the first time since he took over “The Late Show” in 2015. He previously won nine Emmys for “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report.”
