What can we expect when the Directors Guild of America announces nominees for Best Director on Thursday (Jan. 12 )? Ten of our Oscar Experts have entered their predictions for the DGA nominees. Collectively these mirror our forecast for the top five helmers at the Oscars, albeit with the final two likeliest contenders in reverse order.
The 10 Oscarologists predicting the DGA nominees are: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Joyce Eng (TV Guide), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com) and me.
In descending order by odds of winning, we are predicting the DGA nominees to be:
No surprise that Chazelle and Jenkins are locked in a battle for first place. Of the 31 regional critics groups to weigh in with their picks of the best of the year, each of them has racked up 14 wins, including twice when they tied. Lonergan has two wins.
While we are forecasting all five of these fellows will also reap Oscar bids, we have Scorsese slightly ahead of Villeneuve with the directors branch of the academy.Denzel Washington could play spoiler in both races for his helming of the critically acclaimed film “Fences,” in which he also stars. We have him at 25/1 at the DGA and 20/1 at the Oscars.
The only other two helmers to score better than 100/1 odds on our DGA chart are Mel Gibson (“Hacksaw Ridge”) at 28/1 and David Mackenzie (“Hell or High Water”) at 50/1; each is slightly further back at the Oscars, with odds of 40/1 and 66/1 respectively.
