Season 10 of the reboot of “Doctor Who” kicks off April 15 on BBC America. It will be the last for Peter Capaldi who is exiting his role as the 12th incarnation of the title character after three seasons. And we now know that it will include the first encounter for his version of the Doctor with his greatest enemy, the Master (John Simm). Simm first played the role in 2007, and did battle with Doctor No. 10, David Tennant, in five episodes. The last of these aired on New Year’s Day, 2010.
Back then, the series was still under the supervision of Russell T. Davies, who had convinced the BBC to reboot the show in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. When he departed after one season, Tennant took over for three more before exiting in that New Year’s Day episode. He was replaced by Matt Smith while Davies, who had also departed then, saw Steven Moffat take over as showrunner. This creative force is also saying farewell after this season. He also oversaw “Sherlock,” the modern-day take on Arthur Conan Doyle‘s fabled detective Sherlock Holmes, for which he has won two Emmys including Best TV Movie in 2016 for the episode “The Abominable Bride.”
Under Moffat’s watch, the Master has been regenerated as Missy and played by scene stealer Michelle Gomez in nine episodes from 2014 and 2015. We already knew that Missy returns in episode four, “Extremis,” and that well be when Simm make his appearance as the Master. Indeed, as Moffat teased in a statement from the BBC, “Nothing stays secret for long on ‘Doctor Who,’ but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what The Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor.” However, he did allow, “It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favorites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash.”
The BBC also issued a statement from Simm: “I can confirm that it’s true. Thanks to the power of time travel, I’m back. It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people, and I can’t wait for you all to see what The Master gets up to in the next series.”
