‘Doctor Who’ season 10 premiere has new companion and old enemy [WATCH]

Peter Capaldi is exiting his role as the latest incarnation of “Doctor Who” at the end of this season which kicks off April 15 on BBC America. In the teaser trailer for the show (watch above), his character warns, “Something’s coming and I have the feeling that we are going to be very busy.” Indeed, over the course of just 60 seconds, we see his new companion Bill (Pearl Mackie) and his alien servant Nardole (Matt Lucas) help him fight foes including the Cybermen, the Ice Warriors and, of course, the Daleks, which feature in the first episode. And we get a glimpse of his nemesis Missy (Michelle Gomez).

Since the BBC rebooted “Doctor Who” in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston, five actors have played the part. Capaldi, who was a fan of the original incarnation of the show that debuted back in 1963 and ran for a quarter-century, took over in season eight. Best-known for his over-the-top role in the political satire “The Thick of It,” his tenure as the Doctor was rather rocky. To most ardent viewers, his reign as the Time Lord was not as successful as his two immediate predecessors — David Tennant (“Broadchurch,” “Jessica Jones”) and Matt Smith (“The Crown”) — who each played the part for three seasons as well.

Showrunner Steven Moffat, who joined the show along with Smith in 2010, is also departing at the end of the season. He also oversees “Sherlock,” the modern-day take on Arthur Conan Doyle‘s fabled detective Sherlock Holmes, for which he has won two Emmys including Best TV Movie in 2016 for the episode “The Abominable Bride.”
