The smash hit revival of “Hello, Dolly!” leads with 10 nominations for the Drama Desk Awards, including a bid by Tony Awards frontrunner Bette Midler. Right behind with nine nominations each are the new tuners “Anastasia” and “Come From Away.” Nominations for these awards were announced on April 27, the same day as the end of the Broadway season. (See the full list of Drama Desk Awards nominations.)
However, as with the Outer Critics Circle Awards, these kudos also consider both Broadway and off-Broadway fare. To that end, the Broadway productions of “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Significant Other” were ineligible as they were considered last year for their Off-Broadway runs. Conversely, the plays “Indecent,” “Oslo” and “Sweat,” which all transferred to Broadway this season, were eligible for their original runs which happened this season as well. Another transfer, the tuner “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” is a hybrid, with only new cast members and design elements eligible for consideration as the other components had contended here before.
“Anastasia” and “Come From Away” are the only Broadway tuners up for Best Musical; that race is rounded out by the Off Broadway productions of seven-time nominee “The Band’s Visit,” which may well transfer to the rialto as well as “Hadestown,” “The Lightning Thief.”
Nominees will be feted at a May 10 reception at the Marriott Marquis while winners will be revealed on June 4 during a ceremony at the Town Hall in midtown Manhattan to be hosted once again by Michael Urie.
