Dylan Minnette (’13 Reasons Why’): Our show ‘touches people because it’s just real’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]

“I think it touches people because it’s just real,” divulges Dylan Minnette during our recent video chat (watch the exclusive video above) about the breakout success for the first season of “13 Reasons Why.” Adapted from Jay Asher‘s best selling young adult novel, this Netflix original series stars Minnette as Clay Jensen, a high schooler trying to uncover the reason behind his classmate Hannah’s (Katherine Langford) suicide by listening to a series of tapes she left behind. The show also stars Kate Walsh, Christian Navarro, Brandon Flynn, Tommy Dorfman, and Alisha Boe.

Part of the show’s impact, Minnette believes is its relatability. “People go through these issues and these head-spaces every day of their lives, or at least people around them,” he explains. “These are things that happen every day at an alarming rate, and the fact that we addressed it head-on, and unflinching, and we try to make real teenagers out of these characters, I think it’s what people really attached to.”

Minnette won a National Board of Review Award as part of the ensemble of “Prisoners” (2013). He is best known for his film work, including “Let Me In” (2010), “Labor Day” (2013), and “Goosebumps” (2015). He has also featured prominently in the shows “Lost,” “Scandal,” and “Prison Break,” and can next be seen in James Franco‘s “The Disaster Artist” (2017).
