Emmy nominations 2017: First-time nominees include Donald Glover, Riz Ahmed, Claire Foy …

July 13 was a good day for Donald Glover who woke up to the news that he had reaped three Emmy Awards nominations for writing, directing and starring in “Atlanta.” And his critically acclaimed show is the only freshman contended in the comedy series category. These marked the first recognition for this talented multi-hyphenate by the TV academy. Likewise Riz Ahmed was welcomed into the Emmy fold twice over, for his leading role in the limited series “The Night Of” and his guest spot on the comedy series “Girls.”

Below, the list of those who are being invited to the Emmy party for the first time, including the categories in which they compete. Be sure to compare this list with that of perennial also-rans for TV’s top honor who are in contention again this year. Among those to have lost repeatedly are 10-time runner-up Kevin Spacey and seven-time Emmy bridesmaid Elisabeth Moss. (Check out the complete list of this year’s Emmy Awards nominees.)
