Editors united for Drama Guest Actor Emmy: It will ‘be a tragedy’ if Gerald McRaney (‘This Is Us’) gets snubbed [WATCH]

If Gerald McRaney (“This Is Us”) gets snubbed in the Emmy race for Best Drama Guest Actor, it will “be a tragedy,” notes Gold Derby editors Chris Beachum, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery. The veteran actor has never been nominated despite decades of great TV work, but it seems as though the stars have aligned for McRaney to earn his very first Emmy bid. Who are the other five stars that could compete against him this year? Our Best Drama Guest Actor discussion begins at the 42:11 mark in the video above.

When our editors’ predictions are combined, the Top 10 contenders for Best Drama Guest Actor are McRaney, Ben Mendelsohn (“Bloodline”), Hank Azaria (“Ray Donovan”), Dylan Baker (“The Good Fight”), David Strathairn (“Billions”), Brian Tyree Henry (“This Is Us”), Beau Bridges (“Masters of Sex”), Denis O’Hare (“This Is Us”), Lars Mikkelsen (“House of Cards”) and BD Wong (“Mr. Robot”).

“You will never get me to move Gerald McRaney off the top line,” declare Beachum. “He better get nominated. If they go with just the six most frequent names that they always nominate and they don’t put him in, I’m just gonna be so frustrated.”

Montgomery agrees, admitting, “He’s the only one in my top six who I feel even safe is getting in. I’d be really shocked if he’s not nominated.” He later adds, “I can’t think of six people in this category who could get in ahead of him where it wouldn’t be outrageous.”

Dixon has even noticed that McRaney’s “This Is Us” co-stars have all tweeted in recent weeks that he deserves Emmy attention. “His co-stars are coming together to share the words that he’s never been nominated. He’s been working for 40-something years. Never a single Emmy nomination.”

Azaria won this category last year, while Mendelsohn prevailed in the supporting race but now competes here in the guest category.
