First Emmys 2017 deadline looms: Entries must be in by May 1

The Emmy Awards aren’t until September 17 but contenders only have until May 1 to submit all the information required in order to be included on the ballots. Nominations voting begins online on June 12 and runs for a full two weeks until June 26 (last year, balloting ran from June 15 to June 27).

All 17,000 plus members of the TV academy can cast nomination ballots for program nominations (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups.) Voters may select up to 10 programs per category. Unlike the Oscars, Emmy voters do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. There will be seven nominees in each of Comedy Series and Drama Series and six in the rest.

Nominations will be announced at the TV academy’s headquarters in North Hollywood on July 13; last year’s big reveal was on July 14. The final round of voting begins online on August 14 and again runs for a full two weeks until August 28; last year’s two-week voting period began Aug. 15.

For the second time, the Creative Arts section of the Emmy Awards has been split into two ceremonies which will take place on September 9 and 10. The Primetime awards will be handed out on Sept. 17.
