On Tuesday, we finally got our first extended look at Ewan McGregor in one of his two roles on the upcoming third season of “Fargo.” He plays a pair of brothers – Emmit Stussy, the self-titled “Parking Lot King of Minnesota,” and Ray, the younger sibling who is nursing a grudge while working as a parole officer. Their rivalry, which has gone on since they were boys, leads to a murder.
In the teaser above, McGregor is all but unrecognizable as Ray, with a lot less hair and many more pounds than we are used to seeing on the actor. Ray and his new girlfriend, parolee Nikki Swango (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), are rattled when they spot the local police chief, Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coon) in the diner where they had been enjoying a meal.
Last summer, showrunner Noah Hawley teased that this third installment, which debuts on April 19, will connect to what’s come before. “I think that the fun is that these things connect,” he told the crowd at an Emmy reception. “They connect sometimes in very important, literal ways, like Season 2 being backstory for Season 1, or Oliver Platt finding the money from the movie. And then they connect in tangential ways, too, which is also really interesting.”
Season 1 of “Fargo” was FX’s first-ever program to win a series prize at the Emmy Awards. It also took home trophies for Best Directing and Best Casting. The second installment won Emmys for Best Cinematography and Best Sound Editing, but lost many of the major categories to network rival “The People v. O.J. Simpson.” Are you excited for “Fargo” Season 3? Sound off in our TV forums or in the comments section below!
