From “Another Day of Sun” to another day of the moon: “First Man,” the Neil Armstrong biopic starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Oscar winner Damien Chazelle, is already eyeing Oscars. It will take one small step for man and one giant leap into theaters on October 12, 2018, right in the midst of the fall awards season.
Of course, Gosling and Chazelle just collaborated on the movie musical “La La Land,” which earned 14 Oscar nominations and six victories including Best Director for Chazelle but infamously fell short of Best Picture in the envelope mix-up heard ’round the world. Gosling earned a Best Actor nomination, as he also did 10 years prior for his role as a drug addicted teacher in “Half Nelson” (2006), but he has yet to win an Oscar. However, this might be his best opportunity yet, since he’ll be playing a real-life heroic figure — we know how much the Oscars love those.
When we talked to Chazelle this past season about “La La Land” (watch here), he teased “First Man” and promised that it will not be a musical. A missed opportunity perhaps? After all, who hasn’t watched the moon landing and wondered what it would be like with more jazz and dance numbers — just me?
