Samantha Bee looked back on the week in news during the August 2 episode of “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” and few political events were bigger than the defeat of the Senate Republicans’ attempt to repeal and kinda sorta replace Obamacare. But Bee’s main segment wasn’t about the repeal effort, per se. It was about Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers’ attempts to sabotage Obamacare to try to prove their dubious doomsday claims about the health care law. Or as Bee summarizes, “You break it, you pretend it was already broken, and let people die to score political points.” Watch “Full Frontal” above.
Bee focuses on the GOP claim that Obamacare is in a death spiral, which describes an accelerating rise in costs as the result of healthier people leaving the insurance market due to the accelerating rise in costs. But “Obamacare is still alive and well despite Republicans hacking away at it for seven long years,” Bee explains. However, Republicans aren’t working to prevent or reverse a death spiral. They’ve been working to make it come true ever since the law was passed, from legal challenges to attack ads.
“Meanwhile, back in the Senate, alleged sane Republican Marco Rubio sneakily undermined Obamacare by using a spending bill to get rid of the so-called risk corridor, which is not what Mike Pence calls a West Wing hallway with a woman in it.” The risk corridors actually helped keep insurance companies in the Obamacare exchanges by reducing their risk, but Republican meddling has led to uncertainty, which has led to increased premiums for consumers — which the Republicans then blame on Obamacare so they’ll have justification to repeal it. “Because who minds playing Russian roulette if you’re pointing the gun at someone else?”
