Season 1 introduced the world to author George R. R. Martin‘s tale of ice and fire in a TV adaptation of his popular book series. HBO’s fantasy epic proved to be unlike anything else on television, with dozens of characters (played by mostly unknown actors), disparate locations, graphic violence and blush-inducing sex scenes.
Despite its near universal acclaim, Season 1 only nabbed an average of 2.52 million viewers per episode when it aired back in 2011. However, word of mouth grew exponentially year after year, resulting in the most recent Season 7 episodes crossing the 10 million mark and becoming the watercooler show of 2017.
Over the course of its first six years, “Game of Thrones” also made a name for itself on the awards front. In fact, with 38 Emmy wins so far, the show is now the most rewarded primetime series in TV history, surpassing “Frasier’s” 37 trophies. So far, Peter Dinklage (as Tyrion Lannister) is the only actor to prevail at the Emmys.
