Gold Derby 101: Here’s how you can predict TV shows like ‘Survivor’ and ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ and win eternal bragging rights

Do you want to play in Gold Derby’s weekly reality TV prediction contests and win prizes and eternal bragging rights? It’s fun and easy, so here’s everything you need to know to get started. First, login to your Gold Derby account (or register for a free one via Facebook or Twitter).

Whenever you log in, you’re automatically taken to our Lobby Page where you can see a list of all the events currently being predicted at Gold Derby — everything from the Oscars, Golden Globes and Grammys to “Survivor,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Top Chef.” Click on any TV show to start predicting the upcoming episode, i.e. who will win and who will be eliminated next? If you click on “Survivor,” you’ll see something like this:

To make your picks for a specific question, grab a contender from the left column and add it to the right column by clicking on the green + symbol. For the winner question, rank contenders based on likelihood of winning, starting with your top choice. Make your first picks now and then click “SAVE & NEXT” to jump to the next category. Change them later as often as you wish. Read contest rules.

After the prediction event is over, you’ll receive a personalized email to inform you of your score and rank in our leaderboards. You can check leaderboards at any time by going to your personal menu that appears in the top-right corner of each page when you’re logged in and you press to see the drop-down menu. In the leaderboards area, use the search box to locate the event you want to see. When the leaderboard appears, click on the “my predictions” link to see where you landed. Click your (or any) user name to see a detailed breakdown of right/wrong picks.

Every time someone logs their predictions, the racetrack odds of the contestants are automatically updated. If the majority of users think Ryan Ulrich will win, that means he’ll have the best odds and will go to the top of the pack. Conversely, the contestants who don’t receive many predictions will have the worst odds and go to the bottom of the pile.

You can always see the latest “Survivor” predictions on our odds page. To jump to other odds pages, simply find the correct event under the “HUB” menu. There you can find current events as well as all of our past prediction games.

The standard bet for each question is 100 points, which are wagered against the odds you locked in when you saved your predictions. However, for each event at Gold Derby you are also given two Super Bets that increase the prediction by five times.

Here’s how our racetrack odds work. If you bet 100 points on something that has 50/1 odds and you end up being correct, you will receive 50 x 100 points, which equals 5,000 points. You’ll also get your original 100 points back for a total of 5,100 points. Keep in mind that the odds are always changing as new users cast their votes, so it may be beneficial for you to keep coming back and updating your predictions.

For example, if you predicted Joe Mena would be eliminated on “Survivor” at 1/10 odds, and then a few days later you notice that Mena’s overall elimination odds changed to 20/1, you should re-save your predictions to lock in those new odds. If you’re correct that Mena ends up being eliminated, you will net a higher point score with the 20/1 odds than if you’d kept the original 1/11 odds.
