With 7-to-5 odds from our seven TV Experts, “Atlanta” is projected to win Best TV Comedy Series this Sunday at the Golden Globe Awards. Three of our seven Experts are predicting this victory: Joyce Eng (TV Guide), Tariq Khan (Fox News), and Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby). The freshman series centering on two cousins working in the city’s rap music scene offers the first nomination for FX in this category. If the series prevails this weekend, it’ll be the network’s first win for Comedy Series.
FX’s previous series wins were in the Drama Series and TV Movie/Limited Series categories. In 2003, the network’s inaugural series, the acclaimed gritty police drama “The Shield” won Drama Series. Two years later, their provocative medical drama “Nip/Tuck” prevailed. Their anthology version of the Coen brothers classic “Fargo” won TV Movie/Limited Series in 2015. Two of those three shows also won for their leads: Michael Chiklis (‘The Shield’) and Billy Bob Thornton (‘Fargo’), so that could bode well for Donald Glover who is our projected winner in TV Comedy Actor for “Atlanta.”
In second place is “Veep” with 3-to-2 odds with three Experts opting for the HBO political comedy: Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Christopher Rosen (Entertainment Weekly), and Ken Tucker (Yahoo). Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the sole nominee for the show, and neither the series nor its star have won here despite their consecutive wins at the Emmys. Rounding out the category are first time nominee ““Black-ish” — which leads the comedy field with three nominations and is the sole broadcast network nominee — with 11-to-2 odds, and Amazon’s consecutive winners in the category: “Mozart in the Jungle” (50-to-1 odds) and “Transparent (100-to-1 odds).
According to our overall combined odds featuring the predictions of all Experts, Editors, Top 24 Users (those that did the best at their winner picks last year), and Users, the top choice is also “Atlanta” with 8-to-11 odds. HBO’s “Veep” is once again in the second slot with 4-to-1 odds. ABC’s “Black-ish” is third with 5-to-1 odds and is followed by “Mozart in the Jungle” at 50-to-1 and “Transparent” with 66-to-1 odds.
All of the shows nominated this year have their leads nominated. As mentioned above, “Atlanta” has frontrunner Glover. “Black-ish” has two leading nominees in Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross. “Mozart in the Jungle” stars last year’s TV Comedy Actor winner Gael García Bernal. “Transparent” showcases the previous Globe winner Jeffrey Tambor. And “Veep” has Louis-Dreyfus, who surprisingly hasn’t won a Globe in the past two decades since her supporting trophy for “Seinfeld.”
