The Best TV Drama Actor category at the 2018 Golden Globes is one of the year’s most exciting races, with Gold Derby’s combined odds predicting a face-off between Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) and James Franco (“The Deuce”). Both men are already known to members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, as Brown was nominated last year in the catch-all supporting category for “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and Franco won for the TV movie “James Dean” (2001). Who do YOU think will win the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama Actor?
Both men star on relatively new TV programs — “This Is Us” has just started airing its second season, while “The Deuce” is midway through its first. That’s key because Golden Globe voters are infamous for their love of shiny new shows and stars. Looking back through the past decade of the Best TV Drama Actor category, all of the following men won for their shows’ first or second seasons: Billy Bob Thornton (“Goliath”), Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”), Damian Lewis (“Homeland”), Kelsey Grammer (“Boss”), Steve Buscemi (“Boardwalk Empire”), Gabriel Byrne (“In Treatment”) and Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”).
On NBC’s “This Is Us” Brown plays family fan Randall Pearson, who’s still dealing with the aftermath of his biological father’s death as Season 2 picks up. Because he was adopted as a baby, Randall has now decided to adopt a child of his own. Brown is coming off a major triumph at the Emmys as Best Drama Actor, where he became the first black actor to win in 19 years, following in Andre Braugher‘s footsteps.
Franco is an executive producer of HBO’s new period drama “The Deuce,” which is set in New York in the 1970s. He plays twin brothers Vincent Martino and Frankie Martino, who become fronts for the mob out of Times Square. The fact that Franco is a movie star certainly won’t hurt his chances, as HFPA voters love when A-listers come to television — just ask recent winners Thornton, Spacey and Buscemi.
Besides Brown and Franco, some of the other performers in the running for Best TV Drama Actor at the 2018 Golden Globes are Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan”), Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”), Sam Heughan (“Outlander”), Freddie Highmore (“The Good Doctor”), Joseph Fiennes (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Brendan Gleeson (“Mr. Mercedes”).
