The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. has carved out its place on the next awards season calendar by setting Sunday, January 7, 2018 as the date for the 75th annual edition of its awards. NBC will once again carry the ceremony live beginning at 5 p.m.PT/ 8 p.m. ET.
The 2017 Golden Globes Awards was a hit for NBC, drawing an audience of 20 million viewers, which was up by 8% from the previous year. It did particularly well with the advertiser-friendly 18-49 demographic scoring a 5.6 rating.
This year’s Golden Globes took place in the middle of Oscar nominations balloting. Cecil B. DeMille recipient Meryl Streep drew the wrath of President Trump when she criticized him implicitly in her acceptance speech. He dismissed her as “overrated.” Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel made merry with that description, as Streep reaped her record 20th nomination this year for “Florence Foster Jenkins.”
The various dates and deadlines for the Golden Globes will be forthcoming. Likewise, we don’t know the timeline for the upcoming 90th annual Academy Awards yet other than that it will take place on March 4.
