The Globes Globes love star-driven movies such as “Battle of the Sexes.” This well-received comedy depicts the famous 1973 match between Bille Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris who co-directed the Oscar-winning comedy hit “Little Miss Sunshine,” oversaw this film with its timely themes of feminism and gender equality. The pair are both past Golden Globe winners and all but certain to be nominated this year.
Carell parlayed his Golden Globe bid for “Foxcatcher” into an Oscar nomination; he also contended at the Globes for “The Big Short.” On the TV side, Carell, meanwhile, has a further six Golden Globe nominations to his name, all for Comedy/Musical Actor in a Television Series for “The Office.” He won the award in 2006.
Stone won the Comedy/Musical Actress Globe last year on her way to picking up an Oscar for “La La Land.” Stone contended in that same Globe category for “Easy A” in 2011 and was nominated in supporting at both the Globes and Oscars for “Birdman” in 2015.
Stone is ranked third in our predictions for Golden Globes Comedy/Musical Actress behind Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”) and Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”). Carell is fourth for Comedy/Musical Actor after James Franco (“The Disaster Artist”), Kumail Nanjiani (“The Big Sick”) and Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”).
