“I got the opportunity to be on the Food Network in a crazy way, so to now be the guy that gets the opportunity to represent five years in a row is pretty great,” declares Guy Fieri about “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” competing at the Emmy Awards again this year. In our recent webcam interview (watch the exclusive video above), he adds, “Of course I want to win, but to be called back up and be in this impressive company is pretty awesome!”
This year marks the fourth straight nomination as Best Structured Reality Program (the first year in 2013 was under the old title of Best Reality Program). His competitors this year are “Antiques Roadshow,” “Fixer Upper,” “Lip Sync Battle,” “Who Do You Think You Are,” and reigning champion “Shark Tank.”
Fieri got his television break by winning the competition program “Next Food Network Star” in 2006 and has been one of the channel’s most popular hosts ever since. While he has been hosting several shows over the years, his flagship program is nicknamed “Triple D” and takes viewers around the country to visit smaller, local dining locations they might overlook otherwise.
Regarding the lasting appeal of his series, Fieri has several reasons but begins with his own personal passion for showcasing down-to-earth family restaurants. He says, “I’m a regular dude. I’m a chef. I’m a dad at my house in Northern California. I love food, and that’s our common denominator as people. Some people love it more than others, and some show it different ways, but it’s what brings us together. You can show me any experience good or bad, and food’s been there.”
