One Direction star Harry Styles will perform solo as ‘Saturday Night Live’ musical guest on April 15

On Tuesday, March 28, “Saturday Night Live” announced on its Twitter page that Harry Styles will be the musical guest on the April 15 show hosted by Jimmy Fallon (see the tweet at the bottom of this post). The singer is best known as a member of the British pop group One Direction, but now he’s striking out on his own for the first time.

Billboard reported recently that Styles will be releasing his debut single as a solo artist on April 7, so his “SNL” appearance will be the perfect opportunity for him to promote his new effort. He’s the latest member of One Direction to release new music on his own. Zayn Malik initially left the band in 2015 and released his debut solo album, “Mind of Mine” in 2016. The band continued with four members before announcing a formal hiatus.

Since then One Direction has become Many Directions. Niall Horan released his debut solo single, “This Town,” last fall and performed it at the American Music Awards in November. Louis Tomlinson released his only single, “Just Hold On,” with Steve Aoki last December. And then Zayn collaborated with Taylor Swift on “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” from “Fifty Shades Darker” and released a new single, “Still Got Time,” in advance of an upcoming second album. And now Styles is following his own solo career path.

But now that Styles is performing on “SNL” with Fallon hosting, will Justin Timberlake be jealous? Fallon has been known for his comedic collaborations with Timberlake, who himself transitioned from boy band success with N Sync to solo stardom. But Styles has a lot of catching up to do if he wants to match Timberlake’s Grammy winning, Emmy winning, and Oscar nominated track record.
