Harry Styles has already won four MTV Video Music Awards, but all of those were as a member of the boy band One Direction. This year he’s nominated for the first time on his own: Best Pop Video and Best Visual Effects for his solo debut “Sign of the Times.” Can he still win without his bandmates? Watch his nominated video above.
One Direction went undefeated at the VMAs. They claimed three prizes in 2012: Best New Artist and a pair of awards for “What Makes You Beautiful” (Best Pop Video and Most Share-Worthy Video). Then in 2013 they won Best Song of the Summer for “Best Song Ever.” That was the last nomination for the band, which formally went on hiatus in 2016 and whose members have been gradually releasing solo material ever since.
“Sign of the Times” was released in April, and the Woodkid-directed video premiered in May, showing Styles soaring above the panoramic scenery of the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The single reached number-four on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and as of this writing the video has been viewed more than 119 million times.
It’s been a good year overall for Styles. Not only did the 23-year-old find success with that single and his self-titled album, he’s also featured in one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year: Christopher Nolan‘s “Dunkirk.” That level of exposure and esteem could help him, though the Pop Video race will be highly competitive. He’s up against Ed Sheeran (“Shape of You”), Katy Perry (“Chained to the Rhythm,” featuring Skip Marley), Miley Cyrus (“Malibu”), Shawn Mendes (“Treat You Better”), and Fifth Harmony (“Down,” featuring Gucci Mane).
