Spencer, who is nominated at SAG as Best Supporting Actress, admits that she thought the story was, “historical fiction,” because, “I hadn’t heard or seen anything about these women.” Costner agrees, divulging, “I don’t know that I’m embarrassed or I’m ashamed that I didn’t know this story existed.” Monae, who made her big screen debut this year in “Moonlight,” says she was, “thankful to be a part of two meaningful and important projects.”
We also spoke with director and co-writer Theodore Melfi, who received BAFTA and WGA bids for his script. “I was floored when my agent gave me the proposal,” he recalls of reading Margot Lee Shetterly‘s novel.
