[WATCH] ‘Hidden Figures’ interviews: Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kevin Costner, Pharrell Williams, and more

With a strong showing at the precursors and a massive box office haul, “Hidden Figures” looks well on its way to several Oscar nominations. This Fox 2000 release tells the inspiring true story of three African American women (Taraji P. HensonOctavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae) who provided NASA with the mathematics necessary to launch their first successful space missions. Spencer and Monae sat down recently with Gold Derby to discuss their roles, as did Kevin Costner, who plays their boss at NASA.

Spencer, who is nominated at SAG as Best Supporting Actress, admits that she thought the story was, “historical fiction,” because, “I hadn’t heard or seen anything about these women.” Costner agrees, divulging, “I don’t know that I’m embarrassed or I’m ashamed that I didn’t know this story existed.” Monae, who made her big screen debut this year in “Moonlight,” says she was, “thankful to be a part of two meaningful and important projects.”

We also spoke with director and co-writer Theodore Melfi, who received BAFTA and WGA bids for his script. “I was floored when my agent gave me the proposal,” he recalls of reading Margot Lee Shetterly‘s novel.
