“Insecure” returns to HBO for its second season on Sunday, July 23, following its critically acclaimed first season that premiered last fall. But the creator and star of the show, Issa Rae, understands that you may need a refresher course on where the show left off, or perhaps you still need to catch up on the first season, so Rae breaks down the top five reasons to watch season one in anticipation of season two. Watch above.
First, Rae gives a shout-out to Melina Matsoukas who directed four out of the eight episodes in season one. Matsoukas isn’t necessarily a household name, but audiences are probably familiar with her work. She won two Grammys for her work directing music videos: “We Found Love” by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris (2011), and perhaps even more famously “Formation” by Beyonce (2016).
“Formation” caused a stir for its references to Hurricane Katrina and police brutality, but it helped launch Beyonce’s groundbreaking “Lemonade” era, and in addition to its Grammy win the video swept the MTV Video Music Awards with six victories including Video of the Year. That placed it in a tie for third place among the all-time most awarded videos at the VMAs.
On top of that, fellow Grammy winner Solange Knowles was the music consultant for the show, so watch it, because Issa Rae is basically Beyonce.
