If the news that the first “Avatar” sequel won’t be out in 2018 as originally planned has you bummed out, revisit the world of Pandora in a different way. Walt Disney World in Orlando is opening two “Avatar”-themed rides on May 27. One is a river ride, the other a chance to travel on a Banshee just like the Na’vi do in the movie. “Avatar” director James Cameron gave “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg a sneak peek (watch above).
As the Oscar-winning director (“Titanic”) explained to the EGOT champ, “You think of something, you do a few sketches, and then years later, you’re standing in it.” He elaborated: “A lot of visual ideas, like the whole bioluminescent forest, came right from a dream. I got up and sketched it out.”
Goldberg, a self-confessed sci-fi nut, was giddy with excitement as she described the rides. “You can soar on the back of a mountain banshee or you can travel on the Navi River Journey.” While rolling down the river on a raft looks like something we have seen before, the chance to soar on a big bird is mighty attractive. The imagineers at the house that Walt built must have worked overtime to devise that awe-inspiring ride.
No word yet on whether Cameron or any of the cast will be at the opening over Memorial Day weekend. We do know that the Oscar-winning director (“Titanic”) has been hard at word on plotting out the sequels to his 2009 blockbuster. And we hear tell that leading man Sam Worthington pumped to return to the role of astronaut Jake Sully, who at the end of the first film joined the Na’vi tribe on Pandora to be with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).
