It was announced last summer that Oscar winning actor Jim Broadbent (“Iris”) would be joining the cast of “Game of Thrones” for season seven, but now we have a good idea of whom he’ll be playing when the show returns later this year. In an interview with ScreenCrush he revealed, “I’m a maester, an archmaester. I’m an old professor character.”
He added, “I did five episodes. I did sort of one major scene in each episode.” And he further explained that he’s working with John Bradley, who plays Samwell Tarly in the epic fantasy series. Formerly a defender of Westeros as a member of the Night’s Watch, Samwell was last seen in the sixth season finale when he clashed with his family over his Wildling girlfriend Gilly (Hannah Murray) and her baby son. The three of them subsequently left the Tarly home to travel to Oldtown for a meeting with the archmaester.
The upcoming season of “Game of Thrones” will consist of only seven episodes, so if Broadbent is appearing in five he will need to compete at the 2018 Emmys as a supporting actor instead of as a guest. But if he does earn a nomination it would be his third, following his supporting bid for the telefilm “The Gathering Storm” (2002) and a lead nom for the movie “Longford” (2007). Fantasy fans may also remember Broadbent from his roles in two other literary adaptations: “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and the “Harry Potter” franchise. Coincidentally he played professors in both of those projects as well.
