John Gilroy (‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.’ editor): Denzel Washington is ‘the lawyer that time forgot’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW]

During our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above), film editor John Gilroy describes the title character of “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” as “the lawyer that time forgot.” Directed by John’s fraternal twin bother Dan Gilroy, this Columbia Pictures release stars Denzel Washington as an idealistic, driven defense attorney caught in a time warp. He suddenly finds himself in a tumultuous series of events that lead to a crisis and a necessity for action.” “The whole movie is about Roman,” adds Gilroy, “so you’re either seeing the world through his eyes, or you’re seeing other people observe him.”

Gilroy found his editing work was made easier since “Danny and Denzel spent a lot of time honing that character.” He adds, “If you look at putting a movie together from 10 feet back, it looks almost impossible,” but in this case, “you have a good blueprint, and you just climb into the scenes… The film really tells you where to go, and whatever I do, a lot of it is instinctual. Danny has a good blueprint to start, and you’re just looking for the magic… in each scene that you put together, and that accumulates over the course of putting the picture together.”

Gilroy reaped BAFTA and ACE Eddie nominations for Dan’s “Nightcrawler” (2014) and for his older brother Tony’s “Michael Clayton” (2007). His recent credits include “Duplicity” (2009), “Salt” (2010), “Warrior” (2011), “The Bourne Legacy” (2012), “Pacific Rim” (2013), “Suicide Squad” (2016), and “Rogue One” (2016).
