Singer Johnny Manuel, formerly Seal‘s Golden Buzzer act, performed Tuesday night during the Semifinals 1 episode of “America’s Got Talent” 2017. The last time he popped up on “AGT,” Manuel showed off his diva side by belting out “And I Am Telling You” from “Dreamgirls.” How did Manuel’s latest performance — an original song, “Blind Faith” — compare to what he’s done before? Watch Johnny Manuel’s “Americas Got Talent” recap video above from NBC’s reality TV show.
All four “AGT” judges — Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel — remained seated at the conclusion of Manuel’s performance, suggesting they were underwhelmed. Among their notable responses, the judges admired Manuel’s song-writing ability, but questioned whether now was the right time to step away from his diva nature. Here’s a breakdown of their critiques:
Mandel: “Here’s what I’m thinking. Johnny, I think technically you’re probably one of the best singers I’ve ever herd. You have power and control like nobody else. But you know, you said in the package at the beginning, ‘I’m not just that diva.’ I think that diva is that lane, and you might have made a mistake by doing an original. I’m just talking about the people that vote. I don’t think it was that catchy and I think he would serve himself better doing a classic, diva kind of hit, which got him this far. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Mel B: “I can kind of agree with you. There’s absolutely no doubt that you are an incredible singer. I think what I missed from you tonight was taking us along the journey. It’s almost like you peaked too soon and didn’t have anywhere to go. You have a massive voice that’s so powerful and full of all these different colors, but I think you just hit it out the gate too soon. But you are an amazing singer so I do hope America votes for you.”
Klum: “I actually admire you for bringing an original here. I actually do. I do think that this is a hit and I would love to hear this song again on the radio. I do hear though that sometimes you over-sang a little bit too much or you were yelling a bit too much, but I remember all your amazing performances that we heard so far, and I still love you so much. I do.”
Cowell: “I’ve got two seconds. All I will tell you is, there’s only one risk being a performer and that is mediocrity, so you have my respect for showing us, America, who you are.”
