It’s been a busy month for music with some of the industry’s biggest contemporary names releasing long-awaited new material. Taylor Swift recently dominated the music discussion in late August with her new single and video for “Look What You Made Me Do,” the controversial lead single from her upcoming album “Reputation.” Then big-voiced Grammy winners Kelly Clarkson and Sam Smith both dropped new songs on September 7. Clarkson’s single, the R&B-tinged “Love So Soft,” also came with a new music video. Watch it above.
Unlike Swift’s angry “Look” and Smith’s plaintive “Goodbyes,” Swift’s new single is decidedly upbeat with flirtatious lyrics like, “Every kiss is a door / Can I knock on yours? / Can we knock a little more?” This is her first new single since “Piece by Piece” in 2015, which peaked at number-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and a live version of which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance earlier this year.
Clarkson’s career began when she won the very first season of “American Idol” in 2002. Then she became the very first “Idol” alum to win a Grammy, claiming Best Female Pop Vocal (“Since U Been Gone”) and Best Pop Album (“Breakaway”) in 2006. And she won Best Pop Album again in 2013 for “Stronger.” Her last album, also titled “Piece by Piece” (2015), was her fourth to earn a Pop Album bid.
Though her upcoming album, “Meaning of Life,” is released too late to compete in this Grammy cycle — it drops October 27, and the eligibility period ends September 30 — “Love So Soft” could bring her back to the Pop Solo Performance race. She could even be nominated again for Record of the Year, where she last contended for “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” in 2013.
