MTV has officially announced that Kendrick Lamar will perform at the 2017 Video Music Awards when they air on Sunday, August 27 at 8:00pm on both coasts. Will he slay just like Beyonce, who dominated the 2016 VMAs with an epic 15-minute medley from “Lemonade”?
Lamar is the most nominated artist at this year’s awards. He contends for eight prizes including Video of the Year (“Humble”) and Artist of the Year. Given his strength in the nominations it’s no surprise that he has been booked to perform, and perhaps they’ll give him a showcase as big as they gave Beyonce last year in anticipation of a big night for the acclaimed hip-hop artist. Queen Bey won a whopping eight awards out of 11 nominations including Video of the Year for “Formation.”
The best Lamar could do is tie that total with a clean sweep, but MTV doesn’t decide the outcomes in the top categories — fans do. However, it’s possible they know which way the wind is blowing. Lamar is already a multiple VMA winner, having previously won Video of the Year and Best Collaboration in 2015 as a featured artist on Taylor Swift‘s “Bad Blood.” That same year he won Best Direction for his own “Alright.”
Lamar joins a list of performers who have already been announced, including host Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, Fifth Harmony, Lorde, The Weeknd, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and Shawn Mendes. Additional performers are yet to be revealed.
