The award-winning film features Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling singing and dancing as they fall in love in modern-day Los Angeles, but many would argue the songs really steal the show. Composer Justin Hurwitz wrote the original lyrics with Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, except for the song “Start a Fire” which was written by Hurwitz, John Stephens, Marius De Vries and Angelique Cinelu
Hurwitz was recently featured in Gold Derby’s roundtable Q&A for music and sound Oscar contenders at the Landmark Theater. He reminisced with moderator Tom O’Neil about being roommates with director Chazelle and how their love for musicals helped create “La La Land.” At the Golden Globes, the film just set a new record with seven wins including two for Hurwitz (score and song).
