The Hall of Presidents Wax Museum in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, shut down recently, but that didn’t stop a slew of late-night TV hosts from getting a piece of the action. Rachel Maddow bought a wax figure, and so did Stephen Colbert. Not to be outdone, John Oliver bought five. And not only that, he put the wax figure of Warren G. Harding to good use. Watch the special “Last Week Tonight” trailer for the star-studded biopic “Harding” above. It’s not a real movie, but you’ll desperately wish it were.
“We’ve talked a lot about Harding on this program before. He was our nation’s 29th president, and his administration was nearly brought down by the Teapot-Dome Scandal. But he’s perhaps most famous for his sexual exploits,” Oliver explains. “Oh Warren! Knocking up your friend’s daughter in a White House f*ck cupboard, you waxy little pervert.” And now that Oliver owns Harding’s likeness, he put it to work in the starring role in “Harding.”
The lead actor in “Harding” may be too inanimate to appeal to awards voters, but the rest of the cast includes Anna Kendrick, Michael McKean, James Cromwell, Campbell Scott, and, as she’s credited, Laura ‘F*cking’ Linney — damn straight! HBO has made movies and miniseries about famous presidents before, from “John Adams” to “All the Way.” If the premium cable network actually did decide to make this full movie, it would clearly deserve to win all the Emmys.
