Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Lily Tomlin is entering the “Grace and Frankie” episode “The Burglary” as her Emmy submission for Best Comedy Actress. This installment of the Netflix program streamed March 24 and was the 4th episode of the 3rd season. For this segment, a burglar breaks into the beach home and causes a big scare for Frankie (Tomlin), who is now especially vulnerable. Because of her fear, she starts sleeping in the same bed with Grace (Jane Fonda) but is insufferable with her snoring and talking in her sleep.
Tomlin is an Emmy favorite, even currently serving as an academy governor, but will she be able to halt the five-year winning streak by Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”)? They compete against seven-time winner Allison Janney (“Mom”), past champions Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”) and co-star Fonda (“Grace and Frankie”), plus previous nominees Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”).
She is already a six-time Emmy winner over her 50 years on television with the following victories in 24 nominations: Best Variety Special and Best Variety Writing for “Lily” (1974), Best Variety Writing for “The Lily Tomlin Special” (1976), Best Variety Writing for “The Paul Simon Special” (1978), Best Variety Special for “Lily: Sold Out” (1981), and Best Voice-Over Performance for “An Apology to Elephants” (2013). She received the Screen Actors Guild life achievement award in 2017.
