Guild awards scorecard: ‘The People v. O.J. Simpson’ and ‘The Night Of’ lead limited series

Following the Emmys’ lead, “The People v. O.J. Simpson” was easily the most nominated and awarded limited series this year with the industry guilds and societies. That isn’t surprising as they share voters with the Emmys. “The People v. O.J. Simpson” was so dominant that it only lost one award to another limited series: Best Movie/Limited Production Design to “The Night Of.” The other awards that “The People v. O.J. Simpson” lost went to the drama series “Game of Thrones” (Best Drama Directing), the drama “This is Us” (Best Publicity Campaign) and the telefilm “All the Way” (Best Movie/Limited Actor for Bryan Cranston and Best Movie/Mini Editing).

Unlike the Emmys’ eligibility period of June to May, most of the guilds use the calendar year for eligibility. This meant that last year’s Emmy darling “The People v. O.J. Simpson” squared off in six races against “The Night Of,” which will compete at this summer’s Emmys. Because of the varying guild eligibility periods, “Fargo” received a single guild nomination this year for its second season after receiving eight others last year (not listed below) for the same season.

“The Night Of” and “American Horror Story: Roanoke” were the only limited series this year other than “The People v. O.J. Simpson” to receive multiple guild awards. They each won four, although three of the wins for “American Horror Story” came from the Makeup Artists & Hairstylists Guild, while love for “The Night Of” was more widespread, with each award coming from a different group. “The Girlfriend Experience” and “Madoff” did not win any awards, but the nomination was the reward for them after reaping no Emmy nominations last year.
