The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, and for the first time it’s coming to the Freeform network: “Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger” released its first official trailer on Wednesday, April 19, as part of the cable network’s upfront presentation to the press. Formerly known as ABC Family, Freeform is owned by Disney, the company that produces the big-screen Marvel films including “Iron Man” and “The Avengers.”
At first glance the “Cloak and Dagger” trailer looks less like a superhero story than like the traditional teen-angst dramas we’re used to seeing on the airwaves. The title characters Tyrone Johnson aka Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy Bowen aka Dagger (Olivia Holt) deal with traumatic events from their lives in addition to dramas at school and in their families, as well as a budding romance between the two of them. But in addition to the usual adolescent issues, both have developed superpowers: Tandy can fire light daggers out of her hands, and Tyrone can envelop others in darkness.
This is the first Marvel series to come to the Freeform network, but the Marvel universe has already spread all over the airwaves with “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on ABC and a number of shows on Netflix: “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist.” “Cloak and Dagger” will premiere in 2018, and it will be joined by another Freeform Marvel series: “New Warriors,” which will be the first half-hour comedy set in the MCU.
