Marvel is known for its big-screen “Avengers,” who saved New York City from a cataclysmic alien invasion in 2012. Now Netflix is getting a few Big Apple avengers of its own — or rather, “The Defenders,” the long-awaited cross-over event series that brings together the streaming service’s four Marvel characters: Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). Watch the official trailer above.
These four Marvel characters have all gotten a season or two of their own standalone shows, which take a gritty approach to the wide-ranging superhero universe. “Daredevil,” about a blind lawyer by day who uses his finely attuned senses to fight crime by night, debuted on the streaming service in April 2015. Super-strong private detective “Jessica Jones” followed in November 2015. Bulletproof “Luke Cage” got his start as a recurring character on “Jessica Jones” before being spun off into his own series in September 2016. And martial arts expert “Iron Fist” entered the scene in March 2017. So this cross-over event has been more than two years in the making.
And the trailer highlights more than just the heroes. It also introduces us to a villain played by Sigourney Weaver, so Marvel heroes will once again have to protect New York from a cataclysmic threat. Says Scott Glenn as Daredevil’s mentor Stick, “The devil of Hell’s Kitchen, the smart-ass detective, the righteous ex-con, and the kid with the glowing fist — the war for New York is here, so get your shit together.”
But they won’t have too long to get it together. “The Defenders” premieres on Netflix on August 18.
