Although he was predicted to make it to the “America’s Got Talent” final on Sept. 19, Merrick Hanna was eliminated during semifinal 2 on Sept. 13. This came as such a shock to his fans because his dance routine set to Jon Bellion‘s “iRobot” had been flawless. Despite this setback, the 11-year-old dancer remained upbeat, and spoke of the life-changing experience that was “AGT” in his elimination interview. (Watch Hanna’s exit interview above.)
Up until the semifinal, all four judges had raved about his talent and Simon Cowell even named him one of the overlooked contestants. However on the semifinal, Cowell dismissed him as a “fun guy. Heidi Klum mused that he might have benefited from backup dancers. And while Howie Mandel praised Hanna for expressing himself through dance, he was not as enthusiastic as he had been. Then the producers cut off Mel B, who was the only judge to give him a standing ovation, before she could sing his praises.
With Hanna eliminated, that allowed the acrobatic dance troupe Diavolo to contend to be the judges choice. They made it through to the “AGT” final and will compete against nine other acts: trainer and dog Sara Carson and Hero, singer Evie Clair, singing ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer, singer-songwriter/guitarist Chase Goehring, singer Angelica Hale, singer-songwriter/ukeleleist Mandy Harvey, stand-up comedian Preacher Lawson, dance group Light Balance and singer Kechi.
