Critics awards scorecard: ‘Moonlight’ has slight lead over ‘La La Land’ as attention turns to guilds

The National Society of Film Critics, which revealed its winners on Jan. 7, was the 29th group of scribes to be heard from this award season. Given the overlap of membership with the New York Film Critics Circle, it was not surprising that the NSFC echoed all of their picks but one. However, that category was the big one — Best Picture — and a win here for “Moonlight” means it extends its lead over “La La Land” (the Gotham critics choice) among all groups by a margin of 13 to 11. And with the NSFC opting for “Moonlight” helmer Barry Jenkins, he is now tied with “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle at 13 wins apiece.

Leading man Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”) and featured player Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”) have racked up 25 and 23 wins respectively, including with the NFSC. However, while supporting actress Michelle Williams (“Manchester by the Sea”) won over the national group, that was only her eighth award leaving her far back of Viola Davis (“Fences”) who has 17 wins.

With her NSFC victory, Isabelle Huppert (“Elle”) now has 10 wins while Natalie Portman (“Jackie”) is at eight. Our current Oscar frontrunner, Emma Stone (“La La Land”), has three while both Annette Bening (“20th Century Women”) and Ruth Negga (“Loving”) have a pair of victories.

Unlike in recent times, no one film has dominated the critics awards this year. Last year’s eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Spotlight” was the clear favorite among the scribes, with “Mad Max: Fury Road” far back in second place. In 2014, “Boyhood” had twice as many wins as the showbiz-themed “Birdman,” which then proved to be the favorite of the industry. 2013’s Oscar champ “12 Years a Slave” held the edge among the critics although the guilds split between it, “American Hustle” and “Gravity.” And in 2013, critics darling “Argo” was able to overcome the snub of Ben Affleck by the directors branch of the academy to take the top Oscar.
