“Mr. Robot” returns to US for its third season this year, and on March 10 the network announced major news. Bobby Cannavale has been hired for a series regular role as Irving, a no-nonsense used car salesman. In addition, recurring actor B.D. Wong is being promoted to series regular. And the new season is officially set to premiere in October 2017.
Cannavale is a television and stage veteran who has won two Emmy Awards: Best Comedy Guest Actor for “Will & Grace” (2005) and Best Drama Supporting Actor for “Boardwalk Empire” (2013). He has also earned two Tony nominations for his work on Broadway: Best Featured Actor in a Play for “Mauritius” (2008) and Best Actor in a Play for “The Motherf*cker with the Hat” (2011). He’s also known for his recurring performances in “Six Feet Under” and “Nurse Jackie” and his starring role in “Vinyl.”
Wong was introduced to “Mr. Robot” in two episodes during the first season as the mysterious Whiterose, the leader of the Dark Army hacking group who is mysteriously involved in a conspiracy involving mentally unbalanced revolutionary Elliot (Rami Malek). In season two we learned she also has ties to E Corp, the company Elliot has been trying to take down.
Chris McCumber, President of Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, said in a statement, “[Series creator] Sam Esmail is a true creative visionary who continues to deliver a series that boldly tackles timely issues and leans into the major headlines of the day. We’re eager to share the next phase of Elliot’s journey with fans this fall.”
In 2016, “Mr. Robot” earned an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Series and Malek won the award for Best Drama Actor. The series also won the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for Best Drama Series last year, while Malek has additionally earned two SAG Award nominations. Will the show make another big impact at the Emmys this year?
