The MTV Movie Awards have honored some of the biggest names in show business with the Generation Award, including last year’s recipient Will Smith. As this is the first year that these kudos have expanded to also include the hottest TV shows, it seems fitting that it is also the first time that a film franchise is to be feted. On Friday it was announced that the “Fast & Furious” series will receive the Generation Award at the May 7 ceremony.
Accepting the award will be Vin Diesel, who headlined all but the first sequel, “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003). Joining him will be Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and Michelle Rodriguez. The eighth film in the series, “Fate of the Furious,” sits atop both the domestic and box office charts and is about to break the billion dollar barrier. Expect this movie to make a big mark at next year’s awards.
Among this year’s contenders, “Get Out” is up for a leading six prizes including Movie of the Year and Best Actor in a Movie (Daniel Kaluuya). Tied for second place are another feature film, “Beauty and the Beast,” and the Netflix TV series “Stranger Things” with four bids apiece. Like “Get Out,” the Disney blockbuster “Beauty” competes for Movie of the Year and Best Actor (Emma Watson), while “Stranger Things” leads the TV field with bids for Show of the Year and Best Actor in a Show (Millie Bobby Brown).
