MTV has made its first announcements for who will perform at the 2017 Video Music Awards on August 27: Katy Perry is on that list of VMAs performers in addition to hosting the event, and so are Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, Fifth Harmony, Lorde, The Weeknd, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and Shawn Mendes. Watch MTV’s new video performance promos here and here.
Perry is one of the most nominated artists this year with five bids, including Best Direction for her uniquely political “Chained to the Rhythm” featuring Skip Marley. The Weeknd also has five nominations, but unlike Perry he contends in the top two categories: Video of the Year (“Reminder”) and Artist of the Year. Perry is a five-time past champ, but The Weeknd is still seeking his first win after 12 total nominations.
Sheeran contends three times at these awards, including Artist of the Year. Lorde is nominated twice and also faces Sheeran and The Weeknd in the race for Artist of the Year. Both are past VMA champs.
Fifth Harmony are also nominated twice this year: Best Pop Video and Best Choreography for “Down” featuring Gucci Mane. When the girl group is nominated at the VMAs they tend to win. They prevailed in three out of their four previous bids, including Song of the Summer (“All in My Head”) and Best Collaboration (“Work from Home” with Ty Dolla Sign) last year.
Shawn Mendes and Miley Cyrus are nominated once each this year. They’re both up against Fifth Harmony for Best Pop Video with “Treat You Better” and “Malibu,” respectively. This is the first VMA nomination for Mendes, but Cyrus contends for the ninth time, and she previously won Video of the Year in 2014 for “Wrecking Ball.” And like Perry she even hosted the VMAs in 2015.
Thirty Seconds to Mars is the only announced performer that doesn’t have any nominations this year, but the Jared Leto-fronted rock band has won three Moonmen out of 13 past nominations.
