MTV VMA for Song of the Summer race includes ‘Despacito’ redemption and a Fifth Harmony civil war

The MTV Video Music Awards will be handed out on Sunday night, August 27, at the Forum in Inglewood, California, and you can predict 15 categories in our predictions center. But the nominees for Song of the Summer weren’t revealed until August 22, and the voting didn’t open until August 24, but they’re better late than never for finally honoring “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber.

The “Despacito” remix with Bieber has spent the last 15 weeks at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and should be a shoo-in for Billboard’s official song of the summer. The remix doesn’t have a music video, but the original version is the most viewed video in YouTube history — and didn’t receive a single VMA nomination. Now MTV has made it up to the Spanish-language crossover hit, but will it win against a field of artists with powerful fan bases?

MTV’s Song of the Summer nominees include one video that’s also up for Video of the Year: “Wild Thoughts” by DJ Khaled featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. Two other contenders in this category are also represented in other races: “Down” by Fifth Harmony featuring Gucci Mane (also nominated for Pop Video and Choreography) and “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran (also nominated for Pop Video). “Shape of You” is a curious inclusion as its popularity peaked during the spring. But the Fifth Harmony nomination should be interesting as the girl group is up against former member Camila Cabello for “OMG” featuring Quavo. Will their fans be divided between them?

The complete list of Song of the Summer nominees is below. Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know who you think will win, and make your predictions now in the other 15 VMA races before Sunday night.
