Twelve of Gold Derby’s Oscar experts are predicting that Natalie Portman (“Jackie”) will win her second Best Actress prize for her portrayal of former first lady Jackie Kennedy in Pablo Larrain’s biopic. The actress has already won Best Actress from the Critics’ Choice Awards and is also nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The role is just the latest in a string of high-profile roles for the Israeli-born actress. At just 12 years old, Portman made her film debut as an orphan who befriends a hitman and begins learning his trade in Luc Besson’s thriller, “Leon: The Professional.” In 1999 she played Padme Amidala in “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” a role she reprised in the film’s two sequels: 2002’s “Attack of the Clones” and 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith.” In between the three films, Portman attended Harvard University, graduating in 2003 with a degree in psychology.
Portman earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress and won a Golden Globe for her role as a stripper in Mike Nichols’ “Closer.” In 2010 she was named Best Actress at the Academy Awards, as well as virtually every other awards group, for playing a mentally unstable dancer in Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan.” If Portman wins her second Best Actress trophy for “Jackie,” she would become the 14th actress to win a second Oscar in this category.
