The American Music Award nominations were announced on October 12, and our users here at Gold Derby have been making their forecasts since we opened our AMAs predictions center on October 15. In less than a week’s time there’s already at least one category that appears to have a decisive favorite: New Artist of the Year. Most of our early predictors are betting on Niall Horan, and there’s good reason to think they’re right.
As of this writing Horan gets leading odds of 9/10, but while he’s vying for the title of New Artist of the Year, this wouldn’t actually be his first AMA. Actually, he’s won a bunch of them. As a member of the British boy band One Direction he won seven times between 2013 and 2015, including two straight victories for Artist of the Year (2014-2015). The band officially went on hiatus in 2016, after which its members started pursuing solo projects, but fans haven’t stopped supporting the band just because they’re not together anymore.
Just look at Zayn. He actually left the band in 2015, a year before the official hiatus, so he was the first to come out with his own music, dropping his first solo album, “Mind of Mine,” in 2016. As a result, Zayn ended up winning New Artist of the Year at last year’s AMAs, and his support continued into 2017 when he took another fan-voted prize, the MTV Video Music Award for Best Collaboration for “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” with Taylor Swift.
Horan has the benefit of just how rabid One Direction fans are, flooding audience-voted awards and leaving little room for anyone else. While One Direction lost its three AMA nominations in 2012 (including, ironically, New Artist of the Year), it didn’t lose a single category after that. They also went undefeated at the VMAs, winning all four of their nominations from 2012-2013. They won five out of their six Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award bids, and they additionally claimed three People’s Choice prizes.
And Horan won’t have to worry about any vote-splitting. Though all five members of One Direction released solo music in the last year, Horan’s bid for New Artist is the only nomination for any of them anywhere on the AMAs ballot. That means Directioners have nowhere else to go if they want to keep honoring the band this year.
