Does the fictional Richard Graves still hold on to the title of all-time worst U.S. President in the age of Donald Trump? During our recent interview (watch the exclusive video above), “Graves” star Nick Nolte jokes about this new era: “I would hope he’d be able to hold onto it, because it takes away a little bit of our gun powder on the show, but I don’t imagine he will.” This Epix original stars Nolte as a former Republican President grappling with his less than stellar reputation 25 years after leaving office, as his wife (Sela Ward) charts her own political ambitions. The veteran star recently received a Golden Globe nomination as Best TV Comedy/Musical Actor for the role.
Despite his dubious legacy, Nolte admits that the presidency is, “not a learned profession. They’re doing it in the moment.” Graves, “made decisions on the run, with advice, that he regrets now, and many of them were his own thinking at the time.” The first season finds him, “going back and correcting his mistakes. How would an ex-President do that? He can’t do it politically, but he can do it by showing interest in the new thinking that he has.”
Throughout his long career, Nolte has received three Oscar nominations (Best Actor for “The Prince of Tides” in 1991, Best Actor for “Affliction” in 1998, and Best Supporting Actor for “Warrior” in 2011). He also had an Emmy bid (Best Limited Series Actor for “Rich Man, Poor Man” in 1976), and a Golden Globe win (Best Drama Actor for “The Prince of Tides”). Given his recent Globe nom, could he win his first Emmy? Check out our full interview above for more about his work on “Graves.”
