While Ed Sheeran continued to lead the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart this week, Nicki Minaj was busy making history. As Billboard reports, the rap artist didn’t appear in the top 10 this week, but she did debut three new songs on the chart: “No Frauds” with Drake and Lil Wayne (number-14), “Regret in Your Tears” (number-61), and “Changed It” also with Lil Wayne (number-71). Those are her 74th, 75th and 76th singles to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, which surpasses the record for female artists that had been held for decades by Aretha Franklin.
The Queen of Soul has accumulated 73 Hot 100 charting songs over the course of her career. In 1977 her 54th song made the Hot 100, which moved her ahead of the previous record holder, Connie Francis, and Franklin had held the record ever since. Could Minaj also hold on to the record for 40 years? Quite possibly. At just 34-years-old she has plenty of time to add to her list of charting singles.
But there are other young artists within striking distance whom Minaj will have to fend off. Taylor Swift is in third place with 70 charting singles, and Rihanna is in fourth with 58 charting singles. At this point Swift is much closer to matching Minaj, but Rihanna also has a tendency to shatter Billboard records. Better keep cranking out those hits!
