WWE superstar Nikki Bella becomes only the third pro wrestler to compete on “Dancing with the Stars,” following Stacey Kiebler and Chris Jericho. Kiebler placed third in season two while Jericho surprisingly ended up in seventh place in season 12. Hoping to do better than both of them, Bella is paired with pro dancer Artem Chigvintsev, who is himself still looking to win his first Mirror Ball Trophy after five previous attempts.
The new season starts on September 18, so before she and her competitors hit the dance floor let’s consider the pros and cons.
With over three million Twitter followers, Nikki is the most followed cast member of this season. Zendaya (season 16), Bethany Mota (season 19), and last season’s finalist Normani Kordei proved that having a huge social media following can take you far in the competition as long as you have the skills to back it up.
Nikki’s athleticism will help her in staying level-headed, as well as give her the endurance to endure the rigorous commitment that comes along with this show. That alone will give her an edge over the less athletic stars as they will need to be much more disciplined to withstand the demanding schedule.
Having an over-the-top personality can either help or hurt in this competition. Rarely do female contestants with big personalities make it far or even win. So in order for Nikki to really connect with the show’s audience and main demographic, she will need to find ways of showing a different side to her while maintaining who she is.
Nikki’s professional partner, Artem, has yet to make the finals or win despite having talented celebrities like Lea Thompson (season 19) and Nancy Kerrigan (season 24) in years past. Oftentimes the professional is more popular than the star that they’re paired with, giving both of them an added edge when it comes to viewer votes. But Artem has yet to really develop a fan base like his fellow pros Val Chmerkovskiy, Mark Ballas, Cheryl Burke, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, etc. Although maybe with Nikki’s huge social media following and possible dance skills, this might be Artem’s chance to finally go the distance.
