Sunday’s “Once Upon a Time” will introduce yet another legendary character to TV audiences, this time in the form of folk hero Beowulf. Norwegian actor Torstein Bjorklund takes on the role of Beowulf in ABC’s fantasy series, who — warning: spoilers! — sets his sights on Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) after he uses his specials powers to win a war against the ogres. Based on the just-released ABC publicity photos (see above and below), Beowulf looks to be threatening Rumple with his sword, but will it be any use against the Dark One?
Beowulf is classic Geatish folk hero first written about in a poem circa 1000 A.D. The “Beowulf” text is considered one of the oldest surviving long poems in Old English, which makes him an instantly intriguing addition to the “Once Upon a Time” canon. Since Beowulf is known for fighting off monsters and dragons to protect those less fortunate than him, we hope to see a creature or two in Sunday’s episode, titled “Ill-Boding Patterns.”
Also in the episode, Rumple and Belle’s (Emilie de Ravin) son Gideon (Giles Matthey) continues trying to kill Emma (Jennifer Morrison) in order to become the Savior. And as the alternate version of Robin Hood (Sean Maguire) tries to escape from Regina (Lana Parrilla) and the strange town of Storybrooke, Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) must gather the courage to come clean to Emma about his latest secret.
