“From the very start they hunted us, controlled us, used us, betrayed us — but they could not break us,” says Tatiana Maslany as four of her cloned characters in the new official trailer for “Orphan Black,” which returns for its fifth and final season on June 10. The trailer features Maslany delivering her defiant message as headstrong Brit Sarah Manning, Canadian soccer mom Alison Hendrix, American scientist Cosima Niehaus, and Ukranian loose cannon Helena. The trailer delivers a decidedly feminist message from the Clone Club, who have been victims of a conspiracy to experiment on their bodies and keep them quiet. “Now we fight to control our bodies, to love whom we choose,” say the sisters. “Now we fight for my babies, for my sisters, for the family we’ve chosen, for our freedom. Together we fight with everything we’ve got and everything to lose for a new future, until the end. Together we are one.”
Those four characters are just the tip of the iceberg for Maslany, who has appeared as several other clones with vastly different backgrounds and personalities. The series has been a breakthrough performance showcase for Maslany, who won an Emmy for Best Drama Actress in 2016 for her multiple portrayals. She won’t be back to defend her title, though, at least not this year. Because the show isn’t returning until June it won’t have any new episodes aired in this eligibility period, so she’ll have to wait until 2018 to defend her title. Until then, the sisters will have to share.
