There are plenty of ways to see”Moonlight,” the Oscar winner for Best Picture. It expanded its theatrical run after winning the top prize at the Academy Awards on Feb. 26. It took in more than $2.2 million that first weekend (March 3 – 5) and added another $1 million to its coffers this past weekend (March 10 – 12). Those takings bring its total tally at the domestic box office to $26 million.
And it debuted last week on home video, doing well on both the sales and rental charts. Besides that surprise Best Picture win, “Moonlight” also claimed Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) and Best Adapted Screenplay (for director Barry Jenkins and playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney).
Now comes news that it will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video as of May 21. Amazon has held the exclusive streaming rights to A24 titles for four years now and has just renewed the agreement. That also means that Mike Mills’ “20th Century Women” will be debuting there soon. He reaped an Oscar nomination for his original script that was inspired by his own childhood.
